Join Dusty Road for an interactive comedic and ethereal wandering into consumerism inside a transformed warehouse space where a sculpture of broken furniture pieces sits high in the centre of the room. Participants are invited to deconstruct the installation and reimagine and reconstruct conceptual, if not functional, furniture pieces to create Aeki Breaky Heart: a repairing things that have fallen apart.

This interactive exhibition uses theatrics and satire to explore the fundamental flaws of the fast furniture industry and throw away culture, bringing to light our ethics and our accountability to objects, and attempts to reconfigure how we think about waste. This is an opportunity to repent our consumerist past and impulsive fast furniture sins, reconnect to the meaning and the making of things, tactility, creativity and the stories we create together. A literal reimagining of “fast furniture” by way of collective speed making.

The exhibition will evolve with audience participation into conceptual furniture pieces made out of the original hard rubbish installation.

And the relevance of Aeki Breaky, well, you’ll just have to come along to find out.

Paige Miller, The Dusty Road

Paige Miller is a furniture upholsterer with a decade of experience, and insatiable passion for the trade. Invested in the preservation of their trade and creating awareness and building appreciation around the value of custom made “slow furniture” vs “fast furniture”. They have a unique approach to upholstery that brings playfulness, colour, texture and humour into the pieces. Not afraid to celebrate the imperfections or experiment but always with attentive craftsmanship, they create an energetic and sustainable outcome that sets off a space and tells a story that can be shared.  The Dusty Road has worked with boutique interior designers, leading architects and luxury retailers and reputable brands such as YSG, Pattern Studios, Jason Sullivan, Qantas, Nagnata, boutique hotels such as Sunseeker hotel, Rae’s at Wategos, The Sun Ranch and Tigmi Trading. Every project is a conceptual, and sometimes, unconventional opportunity to reimagine furniture. Integrative ideas come together in an experimental practice & refined process, to create colourful combinations and quality pieces for creative people, and spaces.
