Kaia McCarthy-Smith

Kaia McCarty-Smith is the founder of Wilderness Building Co, a residential and commercial building practice. Having 14 years experience in the building industry, he was initially critical of what he observed and he wondered whether it was possible to do better. After observing the cultural dynamics and environmental problems that beset the industry, he formed Wilderness Building Co. to explore what a modern, progressive and environmentally conscious building company could be. With a sharp focus on Passivhaus, reducing waste, adaptive re-use and the retrofit typology, they have recently completed Australia’s first net-zero retrofit of an apartment building.

Hilary Duff

Melbourne-based architect Hilary, currently at Kennedy Nolan Architects, is deeply passionate about the interplay of materials and their impact on spaces, people and the globe. Engaging in diverse creative pursuits as an architect, podcaster and immersive theatre designer, she explores the convergence of architecture, art, and technology. In 2023, she received research funding for [Again & again & again], a podcast series investigating circular design in the built environment, capturing insights from sustainability pioneers.
