It offers a unique opportunity to experience new design perspectives and acknowledges young people as the change-makers and inspiration setters for commercial fashion industries.
In today’s world, young people are increasingly using op shops to construct shifting identities that challenge fashion industry stereotypes and corporate ethics. In collaboration with The Smith Family, Spacecraft has been running a project with selected Victorian schools, giving students access to the design technologies and technical expertise needed to create fashion statements as part of the national education charity’s SmArts program.
Over four days, students transform a collection of op shop-sourced garments into personal design statements through screen printing, sewing, and critique. On the final day, students collaborate with cutting-edge fashion photographers, stylists, and models to capture their new designs. The exhibition showcases the clothes and fashion photography, while videography captures the students’ analysis and predictions for upcoming fashion trends.
The exhibition, To See Me, is on display for the duration of Melbourne Design Week. Join us on Saturday, May 25th, to witness the emergence of the next fashion trends as young artists at Spacecraft transform op-shop-sourced garments through screen printing, painting, and sewing.

Participants
Spacecraft was founded by artist Stewart Russell and designer Donna O’Brien in 2000. Melbourne-based designer Danica Miller joined the studio in 2013. Since then Spacecraft Studio has been committed to creating and communicating high quality contemporary artwork and design concepts through self initiated projects and through collaborations with outstanding artists, architects and designers. Artwork and design projects created at their studio have been exhibited and acquired for collections in significant Australian and international contexts, from the Tate London to the Tiwi Islands, from Art Basel to Paris Fashion Week, from artwork plans for Japanese hotel to artist’s flags at the NGV.
The Smith Family believes that education is one of the world’s most powerful change agents. The Smith Family helps children break the cycle of poverty with the power of education. As a national, independent charity, every day they work with thousands of children and their families to help them unlock better futures for themselves. Under their scholarships they offer financial assistance, guidance, practical information, and education programs that complement learning at school and provide opportunities students may never have had access to otherwise. Their support begins early in a child’s life and continues throughout their education – because evidence shows this gives them the best chance to change the future.
