This speculative design symposium invites the audience to look back and to look forwards, to imagine what Birrarung (Yarra River) could be in 2070. Join Indigenous Elders, scientists, policymakers, advocates and leading landscape architects to discuss ideas and concepts for the future of Melbourne’s river towards 2070.

Speakers will explore how knowledge systems, climate change, policy, emerging technologies, and design might influence or enhance our relationship with Birrarung over the next five decades. Presentations will include both speculative and real-world solutions for the future management of the river, so that together as a community we can consider what we want for the future of Birrarung and what it means for a river to be understood as a living entity.

Speakers include:

Uncle Andrew Gardiner, Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elder
Uncle Dave Wandin, Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elder
Professor Tim Flannery, environmentalist and writer
Professor Chris Chesterfield, Chair, Birrarung Council
Erin O’Donnell, Senior Lecturer, University of Melbourne Law School
Kirsten Bauer, Director, Aspect Studios
Dr Robyn Mansfield, Associate Director, McGregor Coxall
Jon Shinkfield, Director, Realm Studio
Lisa Howard, Director TCL
Louise Wright, Director, Baracco + Wright

Charity Mosienyane, Regen Melbourne

The symposium will be moderated by Senior Curator, Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture, Ewan McEoin and Curator, Contemporary Design and Architecture, Gemma Savio.

This event is a precursor to a major NGV exhibition opening in August 2024 – Reimagining Birrarung: Design Concepts for 2070. The exhibition asks leading landscape designers and architects to develop ideas and concepts for key sites along Birrarung; from the city precinct, looking upwards towards the source of the River. Through a thought-provoking and visually-arresting exhibition featuring renders, illustrations, 3D models, interactive maps and multimedia, each studio will present their vision for a particular site along the river corridor in the year 2070 – spanning from the city centre, the eastern suburbs and through to its source in the Yarra Ranges.
