All gender bathroom, Wheelchair accessibleArt of Lampshades is an exhibition featuring lamps made from different materials and shapes. The exhibition will focus on cultural diversity, sharing works of artists and designers from diverse cultural backgrounds to express ideas about land, traditions, and heritage by using the lamp as a canvas to express ideas. The lampshades are inspired from home as well as other cultures, including Persian rug patterns, floating lanterns from Asia, and Chinese paper craft through interpretation to create a story.
Created from upcycled and repurposed materials the lamps promote sustainable methods of production, and inspire viewers with ethical practices, including using recyclable materials such as paper, fabric, felt, and yarn.
A lantern making workshop will be held on Saturday 25th May where participants will work alongside the artists and designers to make lanterns using various sustainable materials, methods, and techniques.
Participants
Elly Royaee is an emerging artist exploring the intersection of art, philosophy, and the human experience through her expressive sculptures. She is deeply engaged with themes of time, consciousness, and our existential connections, positioning her work as a conversation with the nature of existence. Elly has been working in pattern design since 2018 and has a Bachelor of Textile Design with a Minor of Innovation and Sustainability from RMIT, Melbourne. Elly’s projects, The Mirror and Observing Self In Existence, have been exhibited at Melbourne Design Week and Melbourne Fashion Festivals.
Melbourne-based light artist and event producer Jade Armstrong believes art holds the power to spark self-reflection and transformation. She crafts immersive sculptures, light installations, and interactive experiences to create an embodied affect to bring viewers into the present moment. Jade infuses her work with scientific research and psychology theory to maximise its impact. Her practice is playful, she is a storyteller who experiments with materiality, pushing materials beyond their existing limits.
Maya Grkow is an emerging Aotearoa New Zealand and Australian artist who predominantly works in installation, sculpture, and drawing. Maya draws upon her memories and experiences from her travels and daily life to explore the human psyche, physical body, natural world, and global ideas. Recently Maya has been a part of the RMIT Sculpture Club Executive Committee and won the BDS sculpture award at the RMIT Grad Show in 2021; exhibited at Melbourne Fashion Week and First Site Gallery in 2022; was part of Melbourne Design Week and the RMIT Culture residency program in 2023; and is part of the Maroondah Arts Activator program for 2024.
