Designed by Human, Cut by Machine envisions a future where Australian design embraces both human creativity and technological precision to shape a more sustainable, circular world. Through a curated collection of Conrad-S furniture, prototypes and sketches, the exhibition explores how design can balance craft and code to build the world we want, one that values resourcefulness, longevity and sustainability.

The exhibition presents furniture collections that demonstrate how form, proportion and material choices are refined through multiple iterations. From concept sketch to physical scale model to prototype, each step considers machining processes before being digitally templated and machine-cut to exacting tolerances, ensuring no material is unnecessarily lost. This methodology demonstrates how technology can realise the conceptual intent of the designer while protecting the resources it depends on.

Evolving over a decade of international practice, from studying design at Parsons in New York to working with designers in Amsterdam and later in Melbourne/Naarm at Kett Studio, Conrad Schooneveldt’s work reflects a commitment to sustainable, Australian-made design.

Visitors enter a working recreation of the Conrad-S Taggerty studio, complete with tools, workbenches and material samples. Here, Conrad walks audiences through the journey of each piece, from concept sketch to finished form. The installation invites reflection on how considered design can minimise waste, strengthen local industry and support a more transparent design process.
