Between Times is an open showroom exhibition presented by APATO, exploring how heritage Japanese design continues to evolve while preserving its cultural and material foundations. Featuring furniture by CondeHouse (founded 1968) and lighting by Yamagiwa (founded 1923), the exhibition reflects on the relationship between tradition and modernity across generations.
Through a curated selection of furniture and lighting, Between Times examines how values such as craftsmanship, material integrity, precision and restraint continue to inform contemporary design. As lifestyles and technologies shift, these heritage makers collaborate with contemporary designers to reinterpret tradition while maintaining established techniques and material knowledge.
Presented within APATO’s Collingwood showroom, the exhibition transforms the retail environment into a reflective display space. Furniture and lighting are arranged to emphasise materiality, atmosphere and proportion. Rather than separating past and present, the installation highlights continuity, demonstrating how design evolves through gradual refinement and technical innovation.
