The Great Outdoors reflects on what constitutes legacy in Australian design: material honesty, local production, environmental responsiveness and an enduring connection to place. Together, these qualities shape how we gather, work and dwell. This preview positions furniture not as a transient commodity, but as an artefact shaped by considered manufacturing and landscape.
The presentation features Mark Tuckey’s new outdoor collection, embedded within a living understory environment, where furniture and flora exist in dialogue. Plantings represent the supporting flora that sustain the very species from which the furniture is made, drawing on the layered ecologies of native hardwood forests — the ground covers, shrubs and soil systems that enable timber species to grow, regenerate and thrive. This landscape intervention creates a spatial narrative that connects object to origin and acknowledges the broader ecosystems behind material production.
Through this immersive display, the collection is experienced not simply as functional design, but as part of a larger story of material lifecycle and stewardship. Constructed from reclaimed and ethically sourced plantation timbers, each piece celebrates density, tactility and permanence. The collection introduces the iconic Plinth range reimagined for exterior conditions, alongside tables and seating suited to residential, hospitality and commercial environments.
Rooted in simplicity of form and structural clarity, each piece is designed to weather and endure. Conceived as forever pieces, they are made to be maintained, restored and passed down — offering lasting value across all sectors and contributing to the ongoing legacy of Australian-made design.
Mark Tuckey considers outdoor living not as a seasonal extension, but as an integral condition of Australian life – where design, landscape and object converge. This presentation marks the first preview of the range, presenting the collection within a curated environment as Mark Tuckey expands its offering within the growing outdoor category.
