Interfacing the Archives is an exhibition informed by the work of RMIT’s 2nd and 3rd-year Interior Design studio. This exhibition reinterprets archival material from the collection of Ian Howard, founder of Aristoc Industries and a pioneer of modern tubular steel furniture design.

Throughout the design studio, students have engaged with ephemera related to Howard’s designs and Aristoc Industries, using a series of design prompts to reimagine these materials. The works featured in the exhibition will explore interior spatial conditions, investigating the dynamic interplay of image, material, light, and surface. These student-created works will encompass built and film-based projects

Situated in the window gallery of the RMIT Design Archives, the exhibition highlights how students have re-envisioned Howard’s legacy, exploring the evolving relationship between materiality, surfaces, and spatial perception in contemporary design practice.
