This event offers a behind-the-scenes look at two of Melbourne/Naarm CBD’s most recent urban renewal projects with the architects behind them. Designed as a walking conversation, this small group tour moves through Melbourne Walk and Collins Arcade, exploring adaptive reuse, heritage retention and the design decisions that shape the city’s laneways and arcades at every scale, from precinct to interior detail.
Beginning at Melbourne Walk, the tour traces how the social history of its founding retailers informs the architecture and interiors of the arcade and two hotels above, before crossing to Collins Arcade, where material honesty and spatial transformation demonstrate how existing fabric can be reinterpreted rather than replaced.
The tour invites reflection on the role of design in shaping the city’s evolving identity and the ongoing relationship between past, present and future in the built environment.
