Meet at Michelle Guglielmo Park before heading over to Balam Balam Place
From its historic pubs to its diverse community centres and social clubs, Brunswick is home to an eclectic mix of public architecture. While the suburb itself is in a constant state of transition, its commitment to building an inclusive community has only been strengthened through recent decades.
Join the Australian Institute of Architects Emerging Architects and Graduate Network (EmAGN) for a walking tour and presentation of a series of places, spaces, buildings and landscapes in the heart of Brunswick.
On the tour, hear from a range of architects, landscape architects and designers that are shaping the future of public Brunswick. An introductory talk will frame the walking tour, before embarking on a targeted tour of completed and future projects around the Dawson Street community spine. The tour will investigate the role of memory in public architecture, highlighting previous histories – from pre-colonial conditions to more recent uses.
The tour includes stops at:
• Michelle Guglielmo Park: new pocket park designed by GLAS Landscape Architects on Sydney Road
• Balam Balam Place: a new cultural hub part of Siteworks, designed by Kennedy Nolan, OPENWORK & Finding Infinity
• Railway Hotel: a renovation and refurbishment of a historic Brunswick pub designed by Therefore and OPENWORK
This walking tour shines a light on exemplary architectural works and open space that successfully balance complex ingredients to produce a variety of public experiences.
