Interior designer Amelia Barry and artist Louise Wilcox have collaborated to create a body of work called Art Is Life that is both edgy and expressive, exploring themes of dark humour, visual satire, and poetic storytelling. At the heart of this exhibition is the transformative power of words and letters. Not only do they form compelling visual compositions, but they also convey biting, ironic, and often sarcastic messages.

To compliment this body of work Amelia has curated furniture pieces from Dimitri Vargas and artworks by Lev Khesin that juxtapose the highly polished and reflective surfaces of the acrylic mirrored artworks with organic hand-carved timber pieces.

Art Is Life challenges viewers to engage with both wall hangings and functional furniture as art in their own right while offering a unique fusion of humour and reflection.

Participants

Amelia Barry
Amelia Barry is a Melbourne-based interior designer. With a studio born from the recognition that beautifully designed homes improve the lives of the people residing within their walls. Launched in 2018, her studio has collaborated with clients on a range of residential projects in Melbourne and Sydney with a strong focus on the rare and refined designing homes and spaces that are understated and sophisticated while being a true reflection of the clients and the lives they lead.

Louise Wilcox
Louise Wilcox is a mixed media visual artist. Louise's unique art pieces are created using mirror, canvas, enamel, and resin. Through experimentation, she has developed techniques of pouring and mixing materials to achieve a free-flowing style. Her practice involves building layers and depth with mixed materials and sculpture work, resulting in abstract, emotive, large-scale artworks. Each piece is intended to evoke an emotional and passionate response, creating an atmospheric experience.

Dimitri Vargas
Dimitri Vargas is a designer whose passion for craftsmanship and art began in childhood, leading to a career in interior design and, ultimately, a deep focus on furniture. With a keen eye for innovation, he creates custom pieces that blend modernity with timeless elegance, challenging traditional boundaries and emphasizing the tactile experience of design. His work has evolved from timber to include sculptural marble and brass, drawing inspiration from nature and Renaissance artistry. His creative process ranges from instinctive carving to structured sketching and modeling, all within a workshop dedicated to sustainability and material recycling. Beyond his own creations, Dimitri collaborates with brands and artists, expanding his influence in the design world.

Lev Khesin & West End Art Space
Lev Khesin's materiality is surprisingly different: Khesin works with silicone, a soft and murky material. In doing so, he often stirs the pigments into the transparent mass prior to the painting process, and partly spreads them during the painting process. He needs several months for each object that he uses with spatulas and squeegees. While applying the paint, it is not unusual to find hanging forms that develop their own feel and invite them to touch. His formative will is accompanied by a deep humility in the face of natural, uncontrollable processes.
