Hand of the Maker is a collaborative exhibition between Australian craft and design studios Robert Gordon and HotHaus Glass Studio. Both studios share a deep respect for the handmade and a commitment to preserving and evolving traditional making processes within contemporary design practice.

The exhibition explores the intersection of ceramics and glass through a new collection of handcrafted lighting. Each piece celebrates the maker’s touch – the subtle irregularities, textures and marks that define handmade work – while exploring form, material and function. The collaboration brings the two disciplines together, creating a dialogue between light, surface and transparency.

Participants

HotHaus Glass Studio
Amanda Dziedzic and Laurel Kohut co-founded HotHaus Glass Studio in 2019, establishing the studio from the ground up, including the creation of their own hot glass furnace. HotHaus is a fully operational glass studio that produces exhibition works and glass production ware such as homewares and lighting, as well as manufactures for other designers. HotHaus also offers public classes and has collaborated on large-scale commissioned projects in partnership with institutions such as Monash University, the Melbourne Film Festival, Dulux, The Design Files and Craft Victoria.HotHaus also offers an annual residency program for emerging glass artists and recently expanded to include masterclasses for professionals in the field. The studio supports experimentation and the development of glass as an artistic medium.

Robert Gordon
Robert Gordon is a pioneer of the Australian ceramics industry, crafting with clay since 1945. The business employs thirty-five local craftspeople in its Melbourne workshop, maintaining a strong focus on Australian-made production. The studio has a long-standing reputation for design and craftsmanship and brings extensive experience in organising and delivering public-facing events, including workshops, open studios and exhibitions. More recently, Robert Gordon has exhibited at major national trade and design shows.

Tweed Twigs
Tweed Twigs is a Melbourne-based floral design studio founded by Graham Ho, whose background in architecture shapes its approach to botanical design. Guided by spatial thinking and a deep sensitivity to form and material, Graham treats flowers as a medium of living architecture – ephemeral yet expressive, structural yet organic. Each arrangement is more than decoration; it is a temporary structure composed with the same intention and clarity as something built to endure. Whether for intimate settings or large-scale installations, Tweed Twigs creates work that responds to its environment with purpose – balancing the rigour of design with the rhythm of nature.
