8/1 Gordon St, Elsternwick VIC 3185, Australia
This conversation will be exploring creating identity at scale – considering how good design can accomplish the fundamentals of “home” at higher densities.
In Australia in particular, multi-residential living has been regarded with some reticence, given success has historically been measured by the quarter-acre. Apartment living has carried associations of mass production, poor amenity, and compressed living – but, thanks to some progressive designers, developers, and architects creating compelling, design-led dwellings, that association is starting to change. Defying the cookie-cutter typology, there are now precedents for varied, interesting, sustainable, connected and beautiful apartment residences in medium- and high-density contexts.
The conversation will be around the industry’s shifting priorities – the environmental, economic, and community and benefits of higher density living – and how considered design can achieve the spirit of the stand-alone home in multi-residential dwellings.
