Amy Voterakis, in collaboration with HALI Rugs, presents an exhibition of new works by emerging ceramic artist Alexandra Howie.

Howie’s debut solo exhibition, Surfacing, serves as a tribute to the concept of emergence. The sculpted vessels of her burgeoning practice bring forth what lies hidden within – allowing the intangible to take physical form. Archetypal forms are meticulously sculpted to render them as if swathed in folds of fabric and wet drapery. Howie’s distinctive work resonates with both tradition and innovation, integrating rich historical references with intimations of culture and ritual.

Participants

Alexandra Howie
Alexandra Howie is an emerging ceramic artist based in Melbourne (Naarm/Birrarung-ga) who is driven by a fascination with the materiality of clay and its potential to evoke movement and mimicry of draped fabric. She has been quietly exploring her craft, which reflects a blend of contemporary aesthetics and a deep-rooted appreciation for classical craftsmanship. Her process is as much about intuition and spontaneity as it is about technical skill. Alexandra explores the composition and surface in each piece, capturing moments of motion frozen in time in the form of functional vases and vessels.

Amy Voterakis
Amy Voterakis is a gallerist and curator specialising in contemporary Australian art, objects, and collectible design. After 14 years as Creative Director of the now-closed Modern Times, she returns to the 2025 Design Week program in a new independent role. Through her online gallery and dynamic "gypsy" exhibitions, Voterakis champions emerging artists alongside established names. While her gallery primarily focuses on painting and ceramics, her curatorial vision is shaped by a keen eye for material-driven and object-based practices that blur the boundaries between art and design.
