Welcome to Table Matters; a new kind of career social designed to break the traditional networking mould in an unpretentious and dynamic way. Ways of working have changed for many; the pandemic moved our workplace into our homes, and people have more freedom to work how they want, where they want. Freelance, casual work and short term contracts have made a more flexible work environment. But there is one thing we have lost – connection.

Design studios and agencies used to be a place to meet peers in your field, of all ages and all levels of experience. These relationships helped us learn, teach, network and connect. This is especially the case for the digital, UX/UI and product design industry. So much of our work is done online, with fewer face to face interactions. How can we create space for welcoming community building amongst an increasingly hybridised and remote work culture?

Networking is painful, conversations can be awkward. This can be especially intimidating for entry and mid-level designers who are eager to meet more seasoned members of their industry. Networking in specific industries is often exclusive, with ticketed events capped at specific numbers, ticket pricing fluctuations as well as restrictions on people’s time. For junior creatives, attending such an event can feel somewhat uncertain.

This first iteration of Table Matters aims to create a more inclusive and accessible alternative to the dreaded networking event that is flexible and enables spontaneous conversations to be had in an informal and organic way, without any awkward conversational hiccups. Whether you’re a seasoned professional, a mid-level creative, or an emerging talent, this event is all about meeting people who share your passions, challenges and ambitions.

We’re focused on building real, organic relationships and starting conversations that lead to possible future opportunities.
