James Makin Gallery

James Makin Gallery is a contemporary commercial art gallery established in 2003. We have a central commitment to the promotion of excellence and innovation in Australian contemporary art. This commitment is articulated by our strong stable of contemporary artists, whose work spans and intersects with various genres – painting, sculpture, design and installation.

Our vision is also embodied in our newly opened gallery space. Located at 89 Islington street, it is an industry-leading contemporary gallery, designed by Tristan Wong (SJB architects), the creative director of Australia’s 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale exhibition. This space reflects our investment in the high-calibre representation of contemporary art and artists.

The gallery is led by founding director James Makin and director Jessica Velasquez, who are supported by curators Laura Kirkham and Amy Turrini. Laura Kirkham is the primary contact and curator of James Makin’s 2022 Melbourne Design Week application.
