Exhibition will continue to run until Friday 14th of June
In 2024, a Yolŋu-led initiative to restore freshwater fish populations through the use of traditional fish trapping methods demonstrated the rich tradition of Yolŋu textile craftsmanship while addressing ecological challenges in Gurruwiliny (Arafura Swamp). As part of Melbourne Design Week, Agency Projects, in partnership with Bula’bula Arts, will exhibit this collection of traditional Yolŋu fish traps and nets, direct from their use in the waterways on Yolŋu Country. By focusing on the exhibition of these functional pieces, the project celebrates Yolŋu heritage and offers a powerful example of how Indigenous knowledge and craftsmanship can drive conservation efforts while also fostering cultural pride and identity. By weaving together tradition, education, and environmental sustainability, the Yolŋu people are ensuring a healthier future for both their waterways and future generations.
Agency Projects will be joined by master weavers and rangers from Ramingining for a public program, in collaboration with Artbank Australia’s First Nations Fishing Practices exhibition.
